partypoker and HUDs: Chronicle of a Death Foretold
We have widely covered the partypoker statements about HUDs and third-party tracking tools. After the Rob Yong interview in April, the poker community was only waiting for the date, and last week with the announcement of the $500k Alias Race, the site confirmed that on the 17th of June, 2019, all tracking software would be banned from the room. As we anticipated, all players will be requested to select a new nickname, making the current stats useless, and the hand-histories cannot be downloaded anymore. Also, a new hand replayer will be introduced too, players notes will be lost, and non-specified changes to observe tables from the lobby.
The partypoker Managing Director, Tom Waters, commented on the press release:
"With this release, we will be making changes to our software that will prevent third-party tracking tools from working. We want our players to have a fresh start, and therefore we are asking all players to select a new alias so that all third-party tool tracking is lost for all our players."
With this decision, partypoker is joining Unibet, GG Network, MPN, and other smaller networks that have adopted similar measures to "clean" the poker ecosystem:
- Tracking software and HUDs are not accepted at the tables. Some sites prohibit the usage of any support software;
- Players can only check their hands using a built-in hand replayer, hand histories are not available to download, even for post-game evaluation;
- Seating at the tables is entirely random;
- The games are anonymous (sometimes players are identified in the tables like "Player1", "Player2".
$500k Alias Race – Monday, June 17
Never before a restriction was celebrated with a massive promotion, but this seems to be the way partypoker chose to minimize the effects of the HUDs restriction: $500k will be randomly awarded (with the exception of $50,000 GTD in freerolls tournaments) to all players that login and pick a new alias on June 17 (the promotion will run only for 24 hours).
The Login Click Card promotion will give from freeroll tickets to $10,000 in cash right after choosing the new nickname. The players will receive a free Click Card with a random prize. More Click Cards will be awarded in specific hours to all players getting at least 0.10 loyalty points. Almost $370,000 will be given with this promotion.
Only in the following months, we'll be able to analyze the impacts of the new software policy implemented by partypoker; considering the current status of the poker industry, it isn't shocking that poker rooms make changes to their platforms: two of the TOP-10 poker networks completely restricts support software, and a few others like PaiWangLuo (Bodog), PokerStars or 888 with less strong policies.
