Despite the severe impact of the pandemic on live poker, a new record was recently set in the country where it started — China. The Main Event of the unknown China Poker Games Championship series drew a 3,352 players' field with a massive prize pool of $4,662,000. This tournament became the largest Main Event in the history of live poker in Asia.

While small live series are just beginning to be held in Europe, and there are not even plans in the homeland of poker, the first stop of this year's China Poker Games Championship (CPG) was held at the end of August with excellent results.

Reference: China Poker Games Championship (CPG) is a local Chinese poker brand since 2013. Every year a series is organized in Sanya on Hainan Island.

In 2020 the Covid outbreak caused substantial changes in live and online poker. But despite it, unlike many Western poker series, CPG was not canceled or rescheduled and took place in the last days of summer.

This time only Chinese players were allowed to participate in the tournaments, but even with this restriction, the series was able to set a new record:

The China Poker Games Championship Main Event ¥10M GTD with a ¥10,000 buy-in (about $1,500) had 3,352 entries and $4,662,000 in prizes across three starting flights and became the largest tournament in the history of Asian poker.

Is China the answer to everything?

The Asian WSOP (as the local press calls CPG) proved that poker in China still has massive potential for development even with several adverse factors at once (besides the pandemic, these include the authorities' position to ban online gambling completely).

On the Internet, Chinese poker fans are leading the path. The success of the latest WSOP Online held on GGNetwork was partly thanks to them. Chinese players won two bracelets and four second places (5th position in the country's overall ranking).

Even PokerStars is trying to find a turnaround to stay in the country, even after Flutter Entertainment stated that they would apply a consistent policy to leave "gray markets."

Even after the blocking of many sites, the real-money poker app industry continues to attract Chinese players actively, and, despite all the risks, there is action up to NL3k.

China will remain the most promising poker market in the world in the coming years. Working on it is crucial in any brand, as well as playing against the Chinese for many regulars.
