This week the first match of the Negreanu vs. Hellmuth challenge was played. The game, as expected, was tense, and, unlike the expectations of the majority, "PokerBrat" celebrated the victory in it.

Negreanu vs. Hellmuth: results of the first match

High Stakes Duel 2

After the Malinowski vs. Holz challenge, the poker community "survived" for half a month without watching a public HU match between famous PRO players.

On March 31, 2021, the match between Negreanu and Hellmuth officially kicked off as part of the High Stakes Duel 2 show.

The first session was completed in the fall of last year and did not arouse much interest outside the United States. Back then, Phil Hellmuth beat Antonio Esfandiari 4:0 with a profit of $400,000. This time "PokerBrat" played against Daniel Negreanu, who only completed his duel with Doug Polk only a couple of months ago. Phil criticized the game of the Canadien, for which he was called to a duel.

High Stakes Duel 2 features:

  1. Format: HU SnG with an initial stack of 50,000 and 50/100 first blinds
  2. Buy-in: $50,000 per match. In the second, the losing party pays $100,000.
  3. The game can only end after 3 matches, but players can agree to play a fourth match.

Phil Hellmuth won the first match

The game took place in the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas a few days ago, and the subscribers saw a recording. It was, as expected, long (4 hours) and dramatic.

Negreanu controlled the game initially, and without big pots, he gradually took chips from his opponent. Phil played nit and even boring.

In one of the hands, the Canadian was awarded the title "idiot" from Hellmuth for calling a 3-bet with K9. He won 20k chips by flopping a king. Three hours later, PokerBrat had only 5,000 chips left, and it seemed that his defeat was inevitable.

Hellmuth managed to double his stack several times in an hour, and after winning big pots, he became the leader. On the deciding hand, Hellmuth limped 99 and got pushed from 67 suited. Although a straight flush draw hit the flop, it didn't complete on turn and river.

The bad start did not upset Daniel, and he, along with the GGPoker Network, released a cheerful announcement of his next challenge in honor of April Fool's Day. Negreanu and Hellmuth will clash at least two more times soon.
