A dying format?
The popularity of SnG tournaments, except for Spin&Go, has been steadily declining in recent years. This process has particularly affected their multi-table version. In fact, only PokerStars was able to show some traffic a few months ago. However, this summer, GGPoker launched Battle Royale 30-max, and yesterday another site joined them:
The US-facing site Winning Poker Network (WPN) introduced 27 person and 180 person SnG tournaments.
Please note that the second is still only a promise, but the 27 person version is already available:
- $5.5 buy-in only
- Two blind structures: turbo (every 5 minutes) and regular (every 10 minutes)
- Ante from the first level; starting stack 75BB
Formally, it was possible to play something similar in the rooms of the network before. The so-called On Demand tournaments with 6-10 players required to start, have a late registration period of 6 levels, and over 100 players could register during it. Those are available at 6 stakes from $0.2 to $20 in NLH and PLO.
New $5M GTD Venom PKO
A little more than 3 weeks before its kick-off, the players were introduced to a new edition of the flagship tournament in a bounty format.
- Day 1A: Friday, September 17th.
- Day 1B: Sunday, September 19th.
- Day 1C: Friday, September 24th.
- Day 1D: Sunday, September 26th.
- Day 2: Monday, September 27th.
- Day 3: Tuesday, September 28th.
- Final Table: Wednesday, September 29th.
Apparently, the organizers of the event decided to follow the principle "the perfect is the enemy of the good" and did not change anything in the tournament compared to its spring record version. Back then, the Venom PKO raised $7,160,000 and became the largest bounty event in online poker history.
Satellites will start in the coming days and will be exactly the same as in the spring.
Besides adding avatars, WPN players were promised a few more items, and if 180-max SnG and on Demand PKO tournaments will most likely be added in the coming days, the site decided to postpone an update in the cashier to September 30th.
In fast-fold poker (Blitz Poker), you can play at incomplete tables. For this, a new item was added to the settings.
This solution will possibly revive those stakes with a small number of connections: players won't have to wait a long time for a new table after folding.
The most exciting update was, of course, the decision to expand the range of SnG tournaments. On the one hand, WPN will have a hard time competing with PokerStars (they already have a comprehensive portfolio with buy-ins from $0.25 to $18 for 18-360 persons, etc.).
On the other hand, the network remains one of the largest US-friendly poker sites, and now they will have more options to play.
