WPN Leap Weekend: overlays and tournaments canceled

The American Network WPN announced with great fanfare the leap millions weekend. This weekend three independent events were played with a $1M GTD prize pool, but the results weren't the best, especially for the interest of the network.

WPN Leap Weekend: overlays and tournaments canceled

OSS #94 — $1,000,000 GTD: $115,600 overlay

The first of three millionaire events was played on Saturday, February 29. OSS #94 had a $600 + $30 buy-in. A total of 1,474 players registered for the event (including reentries), creating a prize pool of $884,400. Not bad, of course, but it represented an overlay of $115,600 (10%+) for WPN. Even if we count the fee ($30), the network had to pay from its pocket $71,380 to cover the promised prize.

"kurzak" won the event for $169,700 and "ProBrock" made was second cashing $125,000.

OSS #106 — $1 Million GTD tournament canceled

The biggest controversy was with the lowest buy-in tournament. OSS #106 had a $215 buy-in and had a multi-day structure (the last one was "Flight 1S). We couldn't retrieve the information when the tournament was canceled, but according to some comments in poker forums, it had about $80k overlay.

The event was scheduled to start at 16:30 EST, but after postponing it at 17:00 (because some players weren't registered correctly for day 2), the network confirmed via Twitter that the tournament was canceled. Refunds were processed promptly via ICM chip count. The network will honor the $1M GTD prize pool.

A few minutes later, Phil Nagy (WPN CEO) explained the technical problem and the refunding process and announced that a new $1M GTD event with a $215 buy-in would be played next Sunday on the network. The site also promised an update next week to avoid the same issue in the future.

OSS #105 — $1,000,000 GTD: third time's the charm

OSS #105 WPN

The last event was OSS #105. Surprisingly, this tournament had its late registration period after the cancellation of OSS #106 and had no trouble covering the guaranteed prize pool and even exceed it.

Over 1,800 registered and the guaranteed prize pool was smashed for more than $200,000.

We hope that the Winning Poker Network will recover from this adverse situation and, in the meantime, you can take advantage of our outstanding rakeback deal with less reg-infested tables.
