Aconcagua becomes the fourth poker network in obtaining the Spanish license, after PokerStars, PartyPoker, and Winamax. The DGOJ documents enable Aconcagua Poker to offer not only poker games but also "Slots", "Blackjack", "Roulette" and "Other games". The Aconcagua request was made to the Spanish government the last April 27, 2018; 5 months were necessary to obtain the license and it is valid for 5 years.
Even though this is not the last step for Aconcagua of entering into the Spanish market, it still needed to pass some technical tests, but certainly is the most important one, so we can say that the Aconcagua operation in Spain is a reality and will start soon. Aconcagua also obtained a license to promote the games in the country, a different approach for the network compared to Latin America strategy.
The granting of this license by the Spanish authorities is curious because, despite the fact that the Aconcagua Poker network is popular in Latin America, and even sponsored the Argentine Damián Salas in his WSOP Main Event final table in 2017, the network is not free of controversy:
- The poker room uses an "agent system" to process all the money transactions, it uses a local network of people and offices to process deposits and withdrawals.
- Argentina is not having a very good financial time: its currency, the ARS, is going through a huge devaluation (more than 100% in 2018) and a 20%+ inflation, so it will be interesting to see how the room manages the exchange rate issues.
- Aconcagua is well-known for overprotecting the recreational players, including caps for winnings. This kind of restrictions doesn't match with the strict Spanish regulation.
Today, Aconcagua Poker ranks 16 in PokerScout according to the traffic. It's still unclear if the traffic pool will be shared or closed, but what is true is that the network will have to do its best to compete with big names like PartyPoker, PokerStars or Winamax.
Undoubtedly, these are very good news for the Spanish poker market, which every day welcomes more poker rooms. Aconcagua already registered the website AconcaguaPoker.es, which today only shows this text: "Very soon in Spain".
