Whether winning or losing at the tables, online poker players pay substantial money as "rake". Therefore, they want to know everything about the rake structure in their poker site compared to competitors. In this article, we will compare the commissions in the leading poker rooms in Hold'em and Omaha across all stakes from $0.01/$0.02 to $5/$10.

Online Poker Rake Comparison

What is rake in online poker?

Rake is the commission collected from each pot and poker tournament, which the organizers take for themselves.

For a cash table, it is taken from the flop (usually under the principle of “no flop no drop"). In tournaments, the commission is paid in the buy-in and can vary from 3% to 10%. The rake paid is distributed among players according to different models:

SystemRake is distributed amongPrinciple of rake distribution
DealtEveryone who has been dealt cardsEqually among all players in the table
ActualParticipants in the handWinner takes all
Simple ContributedThose who added money to the potEqually among all players who joined the pot
Weighted ContributedThose who added money to the potProportional to the money added to the pot

The fairest is “Weighted Contributed," which is why it is used in almost all modern poker sites.

How much is the rake in online poker sites?

The standard commission rate of 5%. But in terms of caps, poker sites have much more differences.

Caps

What is a cap? The maximum amount of rake that the room can take from the pot.

The rooms indicate the cap size in regular currency, which is unclear for comparing and understanding the ratio of the maximum rake amount to the size of the blinds on a specific limit, so we converted the cap size (for 5+ tables) to big blinds (BB).

Other indicators

Although the BB/100 indicator can be explanatory regarding the impact of rake on your winnings, it depends on the characteristics of your playing style.

Recently, calculations based on an extensive database of hands from the largest poker rooms were published on the primedope website. We still recommend taking these figures as an approximate to give you a general idea. The following table shows the average rake in bb/100 on the leading poker sites:

Why is online poker rake so high?

Rake in modern online poker rooms is high for several reasons. In addition to generating profit for operators, the rake is used to cover a range of expenses, including:

  • server rental and maintenance;
  • development and regular updating of the application’s software;
  • work of security, support, and management staff;
  • purchasing licenses and paying taxes;
  • affiliate commissions, ambassadors’ and streamers’ rewards;
  • prizes for promotions and rakeback payments under loyalty programs.

At the same time, poker brands are investing more heavily in marketing and promotional efforts to differentiate themselves from competitors.

Conclusions

Comparing rake percentages and caps across limits allows for an assessment of the true rake load, rather than just the nominal terms.

Three online poker rooms share the title of best in Texas Hold'em cash game rake:

  • CoinPoker — up to and including $100 NL.
  • ACR Poker — starting at $400 NL (parity remains at $200 NL).
  • WPT Global — due to a reduced rake rate of 4% and moderate caps up to and including $100 NL.

For Omaha players, GGPoker remains the best poker site in terms of rake and game volume.

Conclusions for other poker rooms:

  • Since reducing its rake in 2024, BetOnline has moved closer to market averages. At the NL50–200$ limits, its effective rake is broadly in line with its competitors.
  • RedStar Poker's rake rate is significantly higher than other sites up to NL10. From NL25–$50 onward, the net rake becomes more balanced, and at higher limits, RedStar consistently ranks among the top three or four rooms in terms of overall fees.

It’s important to note that all of the listed poker rooms offer rakeback deals or loyalty programs, and a player’s style has a direct impact on the final rake. Loose players generally contribute more rake than tight players at the same tables.
