The biggest pot in the history of televised poker
A record has been set in the Hustler Casino (California): the biggest pot during live broadcasts of poker games. The world-famous Tom "durrrr" Dwan won a massive $3,081,000 pot.
The biggest pot
This week the fifth and last broadcast of the Million Dollar Hustler Casino Live (HLC) show ended. The main results of the almost 15-hour session were several pots that surpassed all those played before at televised poker shows.
The world record for the largest pot during high-stakes live broadcasts was broken during a hand between Tom Dwan and "Wes Side" Wesley. After the call on the river, there were $3,081,000 chips on the table.
Curiously, a little later, Tom's opponent won the second-largest pot in the history of cash games in the USA ($2.2M), with 777 against pocket queens in a 5-bet pot.
Reference: Wesley "Wes Side" Fei is a trader and crypto investor. He started playing poker just a year and a half ago.
Hand details
This historic hand took place in the seventh hour of the game with an effective stack size of 1,400 bb!
Preflop action:
- "LSG Hank” made a $7K open raise.
- Wesley re-raised up to $30K on the button.
- Dwan, who straddled on UTG, 3-bet of $100K.
- Wesley – 4-bet to $275K.
- Dwan – call. The pot is $562K.
Tom played check-call all the following streets. The dealer shows 38856 on the table without any flush.
The most exciting part was, of course, the river, after the businessman went all-in and Dwan had to pay the last $786K. He couldn't believe his eyes and asked the dealer: “All-in? Exactly?”
The experienced poker player thought about the decision for four whole minutes and gave out this phrase at the table to his opponent, who at that moment bowed his head on the side of the table:
“I'm going to feel really stupid when you flip 87 or some other junk. What the hell, but it will be even more insulting if you show aces."
But after the call, "Durrrr" saw that Fei had AK, and his pocket queens won.
Why Hustler Casino?
This venue from Los Angeles has long decided to compete with High Stakes Poker and launched a series of streams of high-stakes cash games. Their first fame came after the scandal between Robbie Jade Lew and Garrett Adelstein, a hand awarded the title of “Best Hand of the Year” by the Global Poker Awards.
And in February 2023, producer Ryan Feldman announced the launch of five-day broadcasts with a buy-in of a million dollars and bets of $500/1,000. And if the first days of broadcasts seemed boring to viewers, then when Tom Dwan, Doug Polk, Tony G, and Rob Yong appeared at the tables, there was more exciting action. This eventually resulted in several massive pots.
History
The most interesting fact is that Tom Dwan had previously participated in the two previous record pots at live poker shows.
In 2009, at the Million Dollar Cash Game, the pot was $1,100,000, beating Phil Ivey.
In 2019, during the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series, he lost a $2,353,500 preflop all-in to Paul Foix with AQ versus AA.
Undoubtedly new records are waiting for us in the future. After all, in addition to Hustler Casino Live, there is a revived High Stakes Poker and high stakes games on the Triton Series.
