Ossi Ketola vs Patrick Antonius: $20M Heads-Up

Ketola is back in action. After a series of high-stakes heads-up matches on Triton last year,  at the new stage of the series, the Finnish businessman first challenged Viktor Malinowski to a duel, winning $6 million after taking three of their four matches. He then picked Patrik Antonius as his next opponent. The two agreed to play a heads-up match with a $10 million buy-in.

The enormous buy-in made it the most expensive one-on-one poker match in live poker broadcast history. Meanwhile, it remained unclear how Antonius funded his side of the match. Ketola seemingly has no issue putting up such enormous sums from his own bankroll, but it was never publicly disclosed how much of his own money Antonius had on the table or whether he had any backers.

After four hours of play at $50K/$100K blinds, the match ended with Ossi "Monarch" Ketola’s victory.

How the Match Unfolded 

The opening hours were relatively quiet, with both players keeping the pots small and conversation to a minimum.  It wasn't until the end of the first hour that Antonius smiled for the first time that evening and said, "Nice hand." Ketola remained unfazed. 

For the most part, Patrick held the lead. The largest pot he won exceeded $5 million, secured when he hit a second pair on the river.

Ketola soon regained the advantage. In one hand, Ossi, holding Q♦3♦, had a top pair on a board of 10♦ Q♣ 2♥ 6♠. Antonius, holding A♦5♦, maintained his aggression with ace-high, firing large bets on the flop and turn, but he gave up on the blank river. Ketola scooped the large pot.

From that moment on, almost all the interesting hands revolved around Ossi’s bluffs.

After drinking a Red Bull, the businessman managed to force his opponent to fold top pair, despite holding good blockers, against a total bluff. After losing yet another pot, Antonius finally commented on the situation.

"Are you nervous at all, or is this just the same for you as playing for a million?"

Ketola replied that he was a little nervous and that there was indeed a difference. Antonius admitted that the previous match had been a bit dull, whereas this one felt like a real event.

After some back-and-forth, Patrik finally picked off another of Monarch’s bluffs with queen-high. In a subsequent big 3-bet pot, Ketola checked back with a flush draw before deciding to fire again on the river. Antonius picked off his bluff with third pair, bringing the stacks back to roughly even.

Ketola continued to pressure, particularly when he had position. In one hand, Ossi overbet $3 million into a $2.2 million pot with just six-high. Antonius held eight-high but couldn’t bring himself to make the call. Ketola’s massive bluff got through once again.

Antonius, meanwhile, managed to get paid off on the river several times. In one hand, he raised to $1.125 million with top two pair and got a call from a small pocket pair.

After three and a half hours of play, Antonius asked how much time had passed before requesting a break to order some food. The break did little to change the momentum. Ketola won several pots in a row, building his stack to around $13 million while Antonius was left with approximately $7 million.

The match was decided over the course of two hands.

Antonius limped for $100,000 on the button with K♦9♠; Ketola raised to $350,000 with Q♥9♥ and got a call. The flop came Q♠8♥J♥. Ossi had top pair and a straight-flush draw but checked. Antonius bet $175,000 with a gutshot, and Ketola responded with a check-raise to $525,000. 

The 10♥ landed on the turn, completing Ketola's straight flush. Antonius had made a straight but was drawing dead against the superior hand. Patrick bet $625,000, and Ossi raised again, this time to $1.6 million. Antonius called.

The 3♣ hit the river. Ketola moved all-in for his remaining $4.1 million, sending his opponent into a long tank. Antonius could have won the match with a single call, but ultimately folded his straight literally at the last second. 

Patrick immediately asked Ketola whether he had made the right decision and what Ossi had been holding. Ketola replied that it was a secret.

And in the very next hand, the players went all-in pre-flop.

K♣J♣ versus A♦K♦. Ossi moved all-in for $4.1 million, and Patrik instantly called with A♦K♦. Antonius was a heavy favorite to win the hand, but the J♠ hit the turn and dramatically shifted the game in Ketola’s favor.  Ketola’s K♣J♣ held up, and he won the match.

After the duel ended, the two players embraced. Ketola later admitted that he had indeed held a straight flush in the penultimate hand.

Ketola and Antonius have known each other for years. They worked together on the launch of the crypto-casino Duel, and  Patrik was the one who invited Ketola to the Triton series some years ago.

At the same time, Ossi has previously said that he has never worked with a professional poker coach. He mentioned that he occasionally gets advice from friends who play poker regularly.
