WPT Global cancels rakeback for professional players
All poker affiliates who work with the WPT Global room received a statement today: as of August 1, the room unilaterally decided not to pay more rakeback to players that its FairGame AI system considers to be professional or highly-skilled.
No more rakeback for professionals at WPT Global Poker
Last week, the president of WPT Global, Alex Scott, replied to a question asked at the 2+2 forum about whether they would “stop paying rakeback to skilled players." Scott was clear but no official statement was released, but the debate opened up between different types of players.
Today, all the affiliates that work with WPT Global Poker received the official confirmation:
As of August 1, 2024, WPT Global will no longer pay commissions for players classified by its proprietary FairGame AI system as professional or highly skilled.
This restriction will only apply at the levels at which said player is considered highly skilled. For example, if a player is considered professional at $1/$2 but does not have this classification at $2/$4, the room will not pay commissions on all stakes up to NL200 but will do so at NL400, a differentiation that could cause a lot of confusion.
Who is a professional player, according to WPT Global?
A proprietary machine learning algorithm classifies players as professional or highly skilled, taking into account their strategy and behavior at the tables. According to the room, the system can tag a player with the first 300-500 playing hands, although it continues to evaluate him as long as he continues playing.
The restrictions for professional poker players at WPT Global do not end with the cancellation of the rakeback, but they will also not be able to see all the available tables since the same artificial intelligence system limits the number of skilled players per table, which translates into a "reduced lobby."
To date, we do not have a list of the players who are considered professionals or a clear guideline.
WPT Global support confirmed that players with questions about their professional status could email [email protected] for confirmation.
Consequences
Of course, the most immediate consequence is that the July rakeback payment will be the last for players considered professionals by WPT Global.
As of August, “highly-skilled" players will not receive rakeback from us as affiliates, and the rake chase promotion has been canceled.
The WPT Global statement mentions that in the future, they will launch a VIP program and a program called Table Starter Rakeback, which will reward players who start games directly; however, these do not have a launch date.
As affiliates, we do not consider that this is the way to balance the ecosystem at the tables since many players count on rakeback as an extra income, independent of their performance at the tables, added to the uncertainty of knowing if the artificial intelligence of the room considers them professionals or not.
