Overview of the Bulgarian gambling legislation
Bulgaria, like many European countries prefer to regulate gambling activities with its laws. Bulgaria requires all operators to buy licenses and pay taxes, but the Bulgarian authorities allow their players to play in dot-com markets.
The first steps towards the regulation of the Bulgarian legislation began in the spring of 2013. But they haven't been successful: the very high bets and taxes have scared away almost all potential buyers of the license.
Regulation has begun with the blacklisting of more than 170 gambling sites.
Thus, the local regulator has stimulated operators to buy local licenses and start working on the Bulgarian market according to the recently adopted gambling legislation.
Representatives of the gambling industry were not pleased or worse with this law. They have repeatedly told about the fact that requirements that were acting on the territory of Bulgaria were defeat business of purpose and profitability. As a result, they have demonstrated sustained reluctance to meet the conditions required for obtaining a license.
In the original version this procedure was expected to pay a one-time license fee in amount of 250 000 levs (approximately $175,000). The size of the monthly tax payments from activity's profit was 20%.
However, having realized its mistake, since January 1, 2014, the Government of Bulgaria has proposed another scheme: operators are required to pay a one-time license fee of about €50 000, and the turnover tax was replaced by 20% of the gross profit. This meant for online poker an increase of rake by 20%. This wasn't the best option, but it was much better than initially, when the casino games, sports betting and online poker in Bulgaria were on the same level for regulator.
In general, it should be noted that the Bulgarian gambling market is small. PokerStars was licensed first, but it was not the only one. We offer the following best choice of online poker rooms in Bulgaria and the best rakeback!
