Online poker in Poland

The current situation with online gambling in the country leaves much to be desired. While most forms of online gambling are legal (there’s even a state-owned gambling site operating in Poland), online poker sites remain prohibited. Such regulations seem odd, especially considering that land-based poker is allowed, with even unlicensed entities having permission to run low-stakes tournaments.

Since 2017, the Polish government has been banning offshore sites, but the practice yields no results, as most global sites like PokerStars and GGPoker are still available. This means that fans can play almost risk-free, sharing risks with operators.

Legal background of online poker in Poland

When exploring the legal status of Polish online poker, the starting point is the Gambling Act of 19 November 2009 that put heavy restrictions on online gambling in the country. In 2011, the Polish government rolled out an amendment to the Act, banning online poker. However, offshore sites continued operating with little-to-no resistance from the authorities until the next amendment adopted on December 15, 2016, which addressed unlicensed websites, basically creating a blacklist for them.

The new amendment resulted in blocking numerous poker sites in the country. But despite even stricter regulations, Polish players can easily access offshore websites, using digital wallets or cryptos to deposit and withdraw winnings.

Naturally, many sites have ceased to accept players from Poland, but some websites continue to operate in the country, proving current measures ineffective and costing the country millions of dollars.

Technically, a Polish operator can receive a license and offer online poker legally, but there are none on the market at the moment.

From a player’s perspective, online poker is illegal in Poland since you can only play on offshore websites without a license from local authorities. This restriction comes with certain benefits, though. For instance, you don’t have to pay any taxes on your winnings (the state imposes a 10% personal income tax on winnings from gambling games exceeding 2,280 zlotys or $554).

Available deposit and withdrawal methods

You have a fine selection of banking methods for top-ups and cash-outs. Note that there might be issues with some of them due to the legal status of gambling sites in the country:

  • Credit/debit cards: Visa, MasterCard (not all poker sites accept these options, as Polish banks tend to decline gambling-related operations, so we recommend checking another method);

  • E-wallets: Neteller, Skrill, ecoPayz, Przelewy24;

  • Pre-paid cards: PaySafeCard, Astropay;

  • Cryptocurrency: Bitcoin, USDT, Litecoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin, etc.

Unfortunately, web-based poker rooms aren’t quite friendly to Polish players when it comes to currency options. You won’t find a website or app that supports polish zloty. All transactions made with PNL will be converted to USD or EURO.

Best polish poker players

Polish grinders are no strangers to live poker tournaments, having won a total of $73M+, pushing the country to 26th place in rankings. The list of top three players in Poland has seen minor changes over the past couple of years, and now it looks like this:

  • Dzmitry Urbanovich ($6.1M, partypoker ambassador, EPT Champion);
  • Wiktor Malinowski ($4.3, SHRB Europe Champion, WPT Champion);
  • Dominik Panka ($3.2M, EPT Champion, WSOP Online 2021 Champion).

As for the best online poker player in Poland per lifetime total winnings, the first place goes to Kuba “Olorion” with $5M won since 2009, followed by “GreenNaugahyde” ($3.2M) and “filus” ($2.7M). The overall amount amassed by Polish players has reached $153M, with $1.5 won over the last three months.

Despite harsh gambling laws, there’s still plenty of options for Polish grinders, with relatively easy access to major poker websites. Newcomers are also welcome to join the top sites like GGPoker, PokerKing, and BetOnline.
