Patrick Antonius: 2024 Poker Hall of Fame Inductee
On July 14, 2024, the final voting results to elect the 63rd member of the Poker Hall of Fame were announced. The renowned Finnish professional Patrick Antonius was the one chosen by the players.
The second nomination
This year, after open online voting by a jury of 32 players, 10 finalists were selected. They competed for the honor of being recognized as one of the most influential poker players in history.
Although the candidates included several players nominated several times for the Poker Hall of Fame (Mike Matusow, for example, has been nominated 10 times), the judges opted for a “newcomer” who had only been nominated twice.
Finland's best player, Patrick Antonius, is member No. 63 of the Poker Hall of Fame.
The last European chosen for this honor was in 2017 when the British Dave "Devilfish" Ulliot was posthumously inducted.
Accompanying Antonius, only six other Europeans are in the photos of the members located at the Horseshoe Casino. Patrick commented after hearing the news:
"It's a great honor, something unexpected for me, considering my young age.” (You can only belong to the Hall of Fame if you are 40, and Patrick is only 43). "I am very grateful for the support of my family and friends, as well as the fans, colleagues, and players with whom I have played in different parts of the world during my career. I've always been a big fan of the game and I hope to stay here as long as I can. I believe that my passion for poker is one of the keys to my success. I also believe that my life is as happy as it can be.”
Antonius's career
Antonius suffered a back injury when he was young that hindered his tennis career. The Finn learned poker at home games and soon became a high roller.
Patrick achieved fame playing in the renowned Full Tilt Poker games.
In 2009, he won the biggest jackpot in the history of online poker, $1,356,947, in a game against Isildur1. In total, he earned more than $30 million online.
At various times, he also appeared on shows such as Poker After Dark, Poker Million, and Late Night Poker. In 2023, Antonius played one of the biggest pots in the history of USA live poker broadcasts, winning $1,978,000 from Eric Persson on the show No Gamble, No Future.
Patrick started playing live tournaments in 2003, but he achieved success a couple of years later, taking 1st and 3rd positions in two EPT events. At the WPT World Poker Classic in Las Vegas, he finished second, collecting the first six figures of his career: $1,046,470. He has accumulated $23 million in winnings in different live tournaments.
