Adrian Mateos Wins Triton Invitational Montenegro

Third Triton Poker title

Spanish poker pro Adrián Mateos triumphed in the $200,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’em Triton Invitational tournament at the Triton Super High Roller Series in Budva, Montenegro on Thursday, May 21st.

The illustrious event had 137 entries. Given the nature of an invitational tourney, the runners included some of poker's best-known names, such as online poker legend Linus “LLinusLLove” Loeliger, popular poker vlogger Ethan “RampagePoker” Yau, recent “Tritont Trident” winner Dan Dvoress, Isaac Haxton, and, evidently, the eventual winner Mateos.

Yau ended Day 1 in the chiplead. However, the tough Day 2 competition stopped him from making the nine ITM spots. By the time the 9-handed final table was formed, Anatoly Zlotnikov from Russia led the field with 84 big blinds. Meanwhile, Mateos arrived at the final table with 18 BB’s, ranked 6th out of nine.

However, the masterful Spaniard card player was able to maneuver his middling stack all the way to glory. In the heads-up phase, he faced off against Belarus’ Alexey Lozuyk.

The hand that brought victory to Adrián Mateos

The duel for the title lasted about an hour. In the final hand, Lozuyk got dealt A♣J♥ on the button, which he opened to just under 3 BB’s. In response, Mateos shoved his A◆6◆ for a suited Ace for his opponent’s remaining stack of about 10 BB’s.

It was a standard call for Zlotnikov, and even got it in ahead — however, this was Mateos’ night. The 6 needed came right on the flop, as it fell 6♣9◆6♥, giving the Spaniard trips. The Q◆ and the 3♣ on the last two streets did not change the outcome, thus Mateos emerged the winner.

He got $6.37 million for his win, pushing him to the #7 spot on Hendon’s all-time live tournament winnings list and crossing the $60 million-mark. This was Mateos’s third Triton title, on top of his 4 WSOP gold bracelets.

Lozuyk got $4.316 million for his runner-up finish. Benjamin Heath from the UK finished 3rd for $2.877 million.
